Critical Alliance

Definition: "These are strategic alliances across difference, which are built on the collective strength of diversity in mutual collective action for social justice."
Ledwith, M. (2005). Community Development. Portland: Policy Press.

Application: An example of this is when different woman's groups (black, white, asian, latina, etc) reach out to one another. in confidence and respect, and work collectively to protest for changes in the wage gap.

Adaptation: This theory/practice can be used in business. A group of business that offer the same services can merge/work together to create a collective brand and share profits.

Conscientisation

Define: “Conscientisation “is the process whereby people become aware of the political, socioeconomic and cultural contradictions that interact in a hegemonic way to diminish their lives.”
Ledwith, M. (2005). Community Development. Portland: Policy Press.

Apply: An example of this a community dialogue that facilitates a discussion where individuals are engaging in critical thought about issues or direct experiences that affect the community.

Adaptation: This theory can be utilized within diversity training at a workplace. Employers can engage the employees and facilitate dialogues to encourage critical thinking and discussion around diversity issues that are prevalent at their work.

Radical community development

Definition:  Radical Community Development, “is committed to the role of community work in achieving transformative change for social and environmental justice, and develops analysis and practice which move beyond symptoms to the root causes of oppression.”
Ledwith, M. (2005). Community Development. Portland: Policy Press.

Application: An example of this is a community that has low poverty, high crime and little help from institutions to create safe spaces for children. So the community creates a traveling library and healthcare programs to engage youth.

Adaptation: Teachers and school administrators can use this theory when dealing with bullying.  They can create programs and discussion about self identity, self-love and service to increase compassion at their school.
