Transformation Theory
Definition- A model of adult learning in which
individuals are prompted by discourse to reflect on their own meaning
structures (schemes) and come to a new understanding that is perhaps outside
the original schema.
Apply: Instead of focusing on information dissemination
like in traditional forms of education, transformation theory encourages communicative
learning through discourse. This could be a useful tool for empowerment when a
community developer needs to raise consciousness of the group they are working
with. It encourages people to reflect and reevaluate what they know to be true,
and why they believe it to be true.
Adapt: This could be used in many different fields,
as it is simply a different way to prompt learning and thinking. Transformation
theory could be helpful in a political context when parties can be so divided.
Encouraging politicians to question the basis of their beliefs could lead to
greater understanding among groups.
